“Do you mean like a parent picking their kid up from school at the end of the day?” Lila slumped against me, clearly struggling to convey her question. “No, more like… could someone steal a kid from the school even if they’re not supposed to, even if the kid doesn’t want to go?” The hairs rose on the back of my neck. She was describing kidnapping. How would she even know about such a thing? “You mean like a stranger?” I clarified, and my sweet girl nodded.

I was this lonely one night when I sat waiting for him, and then I slept off because he took too long. It was the sound of a pair of heavy boots marching on the floor and of barking dogs that made me open my eyes, and I jumped up in fright and screamed when I saw an unfamiliar shadow hovering over me. It soon stretched out a hand that covered my mouth to keep me quiet, and dragged me with relative ease outside as I struggled and tried to break myself free. The breaths from the shadow were ragged and heaving, and my eyes made out the shape of a car in the darkness. I instantly knew that I was being kidnapped, but by who?
