Dreaming Walking Barefoot Novels & Stories

With Jackson back at the building site, I decide to take advantage of the mild weather and go for a short walk. Again, I’m back in denim shorts, another camisole, and bare feet with my hair in a braid. I could go in and slip some shoes on, but this walking in the forest with bare feet thing is something I picked up from Talis, and it’s strangely freeing. If I wasn’t sure Jackson would lose his shit about me shifting during the day, I’d go for a run—public forest or not. But going for a run on public land is so beyond dangerous that I’m not about to risk it.

First, it was that strange dream, and now I was sleepwalking. The wind was as harsh as it was in my dream. I glanced around, trying to locate an exit from my current spot. I took a step forward and the earth squished under my feet. A hum travelled through the night and my ears perked. Hoping I was heading in the right direction, I walked faster.

He sighed and gestured for the driver to stop the vehicle with a slight flick of his finger. I practically jumped out of the car with my bare feet treading the asphalt road. I had been wearing heels all day and I was officially tired of those ache inflicting beauties. Damien would most definitely disapprove of me walking barefooted but I didn't want to think about it until I had those ice cream cones in my hands. My sidearm was tucked safely in my coat’s pocket; the daggers I concealed in my boots were warming up as I took each step. As I stepped under the forest canopy, the temperature plummeted as though an anchor weighed it down. It was a lot different, walking on foot than it was in my dream. In my vision, each step was as easy as walking in a park. Here, each step needs my utter focus. The forest floor is almost mushy, covered in decaying leaves, wet moss, and snow. My boots slipped a few times. I even had to hold on to a tree trunk for balance.

Every time I had this dream, it felt like a weight was crushing me, suffocating me, making it hard to breathe. In the dream, I'm walking through a desolate landscape, surrounded by nothing but darkness and shadows. Every step I take feels like a struggle, as if I'm wading through quicksand, sinking deeper with each passing moment. I try to run, but my legs feel heavy, as if they're weighed down by anchors. I'm trying to escape, but I don't know what I'm running from.
