Ruby POV The wasteland stretched endlessly before us, a barren expanse of cracked earth and jagged rocks, where the sky bled in perpetual twilight, neither fully day nor night. The air was thick with dust, swirling in lazy spirals as the wind whispered through the skeletal remains of trees that had long forgotten what it was to bloom. Ru opened her eyes to take in an exquisite sunset full of pinks and oranges beginning to slip beyond the horizon. Though she stood in a desert where the sand was painted in similar tones, there was a light breeze and she didn’t feel hot, nor was the air dry. Off in the distance, she spied an oasis and headed in that direction, her boots seeming to stay on top of the sand perfectly without a cloud of dust following.

She had dimples when she smiled. Now she was dust. The purple light punched through the cavern wall. Rocks exploded outward. A huge hole opened up, showing the dark forest outside. Cold night air rushed in, making me shiver. Then the light died. Raven collapsed, sobbing. Her small body shook with each cry. I lay on the ground. The blast had knocked me down. My ears rang so loud I could barely hear anything else. I tasted blood and dirt. Everything hurt. Through the dust and smoke, I saw Melissa getting to her feet.
