Dust itched and dried Arth’s throat as he coughed it out of his mouth. As the blurry sight of the dark smoke rising towards the skies grew clearer, he lifted himself from the ground. The intense heat of the enormous flames ahead caused burning pain in his skin, making him wince. Ruby … where is she? Arth looked around where light dust surrounded him. A faint figure of the woman caught his eyes.

The wind in the Dust-Well didn't howl; it hissed. It was a dry, synthetic sound, like white noise played through a broken speaker. I stood in the center of the camp, my boots hovering a fraction of an inch above the red sand. I could see the grains of dust through the palm of my hand. I was a watercolor painting left out in the rain, my edges blurring, my colors bleeding into the gray nothingness of the horizon. "Kaima, don't move. Just... stay still," Rowan pleaded.

The witches were gone, leaving nothing behind but charred patterns on the scorched earth. When the dust finally settled, the clearing was a graveyard of ash and smoke.
