As the ship broke the energy inside it was eaten by the root. The ground began to glow. Over the world red flowers were blooming. They were not killing the people. They were cleaning the air. The dirty water of the lake turned clear. The grey dust of the ruins turned into black soil for farming. From the black ship a small pod was thrown out. It landed a feet away from June. The door opened with a hiss. Director Silas crawled out. He was. Covered in black ash. He looked at June. His grey eyes were full of madness. "You think you won? You just woke up the parasite! The Earth is not a planet you fool! It is an egg!"

POV DARLENE The valley of the Twelve Altars was no longer a place of worship; it was the exhaust port of a celestial engine. As the second Spire rose, the sound of grinding gears and hissing steam drowned out the screams of the Western wolves, who realized too late that their "Pure-Walker" was nothing but a beautiful casing for a soul-eating machine.

The hungry looking rogues circled us, smacking their lips together and growling. Rachel pulled me into her and let out a kick to one of the rogues. She was a great fighter while I just stood their like a useless idiot. Picking up a long stick beside me I poked one of the rogues in the eye making him yell out in pain. Buying myself a few more minutes to think, I found myself wishing I could reach Ben by mindlink. "We're coming. Don't worry." His voice filled my mind and I squeaked in response. Rumble! On the battlefield, the earth shook, and the sound of an explosion rocked the area. James turned around and saw a humongous beast charging toward him. The beast’s limbs were like pillars of the heavens. With every step he took, the earth shattered, and profound fissures were created. “Him again…” James’s face paled.

The rest of the group follows as we make our way closer to the fire. She reaches for an a piece of ember bark that sits in a bowl near the fire. Lyra takes a deep breath, and throws the ember bark into the fire. "I'm afraid I will never be enough." she says so softly I almost don't hear her. The ember bark burns so brightly I have to look away. My gaze collides with Callan who has a blonde sitting comfortably on his lap. Something ugly burns in my stomach. I force myself to look away, and direct my attention back to the fire. My thoughts begin to spin as I try to settle on what fear I'm going to give up.

The swirling ball of energy engulfs her before receding and fading away at the sound of barking laughter. A tall man with dark black hair and sparkling green eyes step out of the woods. “Am I late, JaSwana? You know I like a good fight… I mean, party.” JaSwana jerks her head to a guy off to the side, who comes forward with a length of rope.
