Calista Rivers' POV The emergency room smelled like disinfectant and blood tonight. I pulled on fresh gloves, my hands steady even though my body screamed for sleep. Sixteen hours into my shift, and I still had four surgeries waiting. This was normal. This was life. Outside the operating room, sirens wailed. Another accident victim rolled through the doors on a stretcher, and I moved toward him automatically. Nurse Jenna grabbed my arm. Her face was pale. "Dr. Rivers, this one is bad. Real bad."

People were brought in missing limbs, barely holding on. Death wasn't unexpected, and none of the family members had caused trouble. Astrid caught the hesitation in Melanie's eyes. The cafeteria had begun to fill—nurses ending night shifts, residents starting days, the ordinary rhythm of the hospital that continued regardless of who lived or died in the rooms above. Along the corridor was the sound of footsteps of nurses. Some people push the patient's wheelchair, others rush to find a doctor. She passed a room with a red light. Looks like the person inside is being treated. If it was a red light, the situation would be quite dangerous. She wondered why in the world there was a disease that caused so many people to separate. In front of the emergency room is a married couple who are hugging each other and crying. Perhaps the person inside is their child. Then the emergency room lights off, the door opens, and a doctor in a blue shirt comes out to tell them the bad news.
