But as he turned off the light and settled beside me, my mind continued to race. Emma had been gone for three days for her mother's burial. She should have been back today, but she hadn’t. Maybe if she was here and had seen it just like I have, I wouldn't have been questioning my own sanity. I stared at the ceiling, listening to Liam's breathing even out as he fell asleep beside me. But sleep felt impossible. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw that crimson mark burning against Hailey's skin. Or was I really imagining things?
