She was already in front of me, all fake sweetness and glowing skin, like some budget version of a Disney villain with lip gloss.
She reached out, gently took my hands in hers, and said in that soft, manipulative voice, “Please don’t be upset, Essy. I’m just doing all this for Asher. He’s happy, and I know that deep down, you want your son to be happy too, right?”
Oh. So now she was the Queen of Empathy.
I yanked my hands away.
And that’s when she pushed me.
I wasn’t ready, and I wasn’t steady. She took me unawares. I slipped, and the back of my head slammed against the wooden stool behind me. My phone and the comb I was still holding clattered to the floor.
