I pulled her closer, one hand cradling the back of her head. “Not anymore,” I said. “You hear me? As long as I’m breathing, you will never be alone again. Nobody puts hands on you unless you want them to. Nobody cages you. Nobody forgets you. I am your home.”
She shook against me, just once, then calmed.
“Okay,” she whispered. “Okay.”
We lay like that until the shaking stopped.
Eventually, she shifted, propping her chin on my chest, mischief creeping back into her eyes. “So,” she said. “We’re agreed? We save the world. Build homes. Kill monsters. Have a lot of sex in between.”
