THE CENTRAL SPIRE: LOWER LEVELS The sound of the "Void-Army" was a rhythmic, terrifying chant. These weren't the Scrappers I had shared gin with in the Grey-Sector. These were the "Evolved"—men and women whose frequencies had been warped by the First Mother's presence. They didn't want freedom; they wanted Dominance. Jago’s voice crackled through my failing earpiece. "Zora! We can't hold the lobby! They've got 'Resonance-Rammers'! They're coming for the Apex!"

Later that night… After they finally left my room— After the house went quiet again— I sat on my bed, staring at nothing. My head was full. Marcus. The fight. The training. Dante’s confession. Selene slashed her sword across one of the glowing lattice lines. The blade passed through the energy harmlessly. “Someone explain how we stop cosmic scientists from building a super monster.” Mira looked toward Lyra. “There might still be a way.” Lyra turned to her. “How?” Mira pointed at the Devourer. “That thing was their first attempt.” The creature snarled at the suggestion. “But it evolved beyond their control,” Mira continued. “That means their system isn’t perfect.” Kael understood immediately. “You’re saying we break their calculations.”

The leg that used to limp looked strong now. "Daddy, don't say that. We're your babies." Yeah. They're my kids. Not monsters. Not monsters. It's the system. That's why they can talk. Even ready for it, I still flinched when Bubba spoke again. "We don't belong here." They were from thirty years in the future. The apocalypse had dragged on for decades. Zombies evolved first. Then the guardian pets leveled up after them. Some turned into power types. Some got crazy fast. Others unlocked special abilities.

“And if I have to repeat it again, you’d be waking up tomorrow without your little balls—so answer me in straight words. “Uh. Yeah. I think,” he grumbled, and when I glared, he added, “Provided if you install a chip into their main server, then I can remotely control everything, even from the moon.” I slapped the back of his head. "Ow!” “What about the blueprint layout?” I asked, snatching the laptop from him. “Aurora would be inside the building, and we would need a full-proof extraction plan for that.” “The basement.” He grinned like a Cheshire cat, only so much hideous. “Do you know why the place is so secluded?”

As if his thoughts had suddenly realized, he saw a gigantic snake emerge from the cave. This snake was much bigger than the others in the Redwoods, it was at least twelve feet tall. The monster slithered out slowly with its eyes closed and its tongue flicking wildly-- scenting the air in it's textbook reptilian fashion. As it's head fully emerged from the cave he noticed it had two large gazelle like horns spiraling from its armored skull. "What....the....hell" he thought while he looked at the creature that symbolized a monster in every sense. The snake pointed its head to the sky and flicked its black forked tongue out once more, once its monstrous horned head was pointed towards Claude it

His voice was shaking uncontrollably. "These monsters have been devouring too many survivors! Their strength has multiplied several times over! Everyone, be careful!" The entire base fell into chaos in an instant. The squad members scrambled to raise their weapons and engage the incoming tide of zombies. However, the Evolved were on another level entirely. One of them broke through the defensive line in a single motion. It locked its gaze onto Madeline, let out a guttural roar, and lunged straight at her. In that split second, something happened that made everyone freeze in disbelief.

Additionally, there were the 18 Sharp-Clawed Zombies armed with metallic armor, and Blackie the Sky Canine! Lucas and the Apocalyptic Legion was overwhelming. Amongst the tens of thousands of zombies, there were quite a number of Rank 1 and Rank 2 Mutant Zombies. By retrieving the zombie crystals, Blackie would be able to evolve. The Rank 7 Mad Ox Dark Race saw the scene, and it made him take three steps back. He genuinely took three steps back. "This… this… this…" He could have sworn that it was something he would have never witnessed in his entire life. Nevertheless, such a sight had appeared before him.

Zoranna and Luna both looked at him as they waited for Xolvion to expand on what he had said. "As you already know. Monsters can evolve into a better stronger form of their species, depending on their strength and experiences. A normal goblin would evolve into a hobgoblin for say." Xolvion explained, getting a nod from Luna. "Yes, I am aware of that master," Zoranna said, happening to be a monster herself, even though she was born a vampire. "I believe that this little goblin is in the top tier of her species and will prove useful once fully grown." Xolvion then said, getting a nod from both Luna and Zoranna.

She presses her forehead to the back of my shoulder, her breathing shaky. "Tell me," she begs. "Please." I grip her arm weakly. "The Hollow isn't just tormenting me," I whisper. "It's... evolving." She freezes. "What do you mean by evolving?" "The more I feel for you..." I force the words out, trembling, "The stronger it gets. And it wants all of you. Not just your presence or your proximity." She goes utterly still. "What does it want, Kaziel?" How do I tell her it wants her life?
