“What is all that?” Kendra stumbled a few steps through the door to strip the bags from her shoulders, heaping them at her feet. Her wild mane of hair spiraled out from her head in fat curls, making her presence seem larger and farther reaching. Beneath the layered straps of the many bags, Sidney could make out the meticulous business-casual attire of Kendra’s work day, her badge plastered against her somewhere beneath the web. “Oh, girl,” Kendra huffed, “don’t even ask. Kids. It’s kids.”

"So... Kendra's the only one missing?" "Who knows where she is? She practically vanished after graduation five years ago." "Exactly. I mean, Shawn — the Lycan King — appears in the news all the time. “I was wrong to eat your food without asking, but that’s all I did. I have no idea who she is.” Kendra took advantage of the fact that her aunt and cousin were focused on the camp’s intruder and climbed out of the tree as quietly as she could. She didn’t know why, but she wanted to keep the fact that she’d been watching the entire time a secret. Maybe it was because she felt guilty for letting it get that far? She couldn’t say. It was just a strong feeling inside of her that she followed. “Where were you?” Felix asked with concern.

They found me on the streets in bad shape. "I'm okay mom." I hugged her back. "I just worry when you or your sister are out, I worry when Emily is in kindergarten. I just want my family with me, always." "And we will, no matter what." I smiled as she did too. "Guess who?" Kendra appeared. "Paolo did say we were gonna get a visit." I hugged her. Kendra is Paolo's granddaughter. She's a vampire/witch. "Kendra!" Emily squealed as she hugged her.

I said as I watched her carefully, thinking there was definitely more to her than that which met the eyes. “I wouldn’t say years but yeah it’s been awhile” Kendra said before she took a small bite of her burger and made sure her beautiful brown eyes didn’t leave mine. She wasn’t intimidated by my question at the slightest and I wondered if she was telling me the truth, because if I had learned one thing about her today that was that she was feared no one and was tough as hell. “What were you and Gabriel talking about just before everything took a turn for the worst?” Kendra asked just as I changed the song that was playing in the background.

We’d been too loud. I stretched my arms out for a hug. She walked past me, straight to Rheya. Her tiny hands tugged at the hem of her dress. Rheya picked her up. She clung to her neck with such ease, like she belonged there. And then Kendra turned to look at me. Not afraid, but disappointed. That look cut deep. Rheya’s fingers threaded gently through her hair, instinctive. Protective. Kendra hated strangers. She didn’t cling.

Furious with the fact that her body was responding to Minerva’s expert touch, she shuddered with repulsion. “Come on,” Minerva teased. “I can see that you like it. Give me a nibble and I’ll answer a question. Deal?” Kendra was at a loss over what to do. She needed to know more about where she was and what to expect and it seemed that the only way that she was going to find out was to give in to this lesbian queen. She saw no way out of it. She worried about giving the woman a little when her body clearly wanted a lot. What was happening?

Dash frowned, folding his arms and making me shake my head. Kendra seemed breathless. “I’ll be on my way, so it’s goodbye Kat. Bye, kids.” She turned to leave with a maid who was previously waiting for her a distance away to lead her out of the packhouse. “Bye Auntie Kenny!” “She was nice,” Aurora whispered as we watched her disappear into the hallways. They had no idea. If they knew how the wolves that surrounded us have treated me, they would see them differently. “Kendra! Kendra.” She looked back at me, a soft smile on her face. “What about the rogues?!”

“What is it? What did you find?” Raven stepped closer, and for the first time I saw the shape of the thing she’d been chasing for months. “Kieran’s not what we thought. He…” she stopped, breath hot, “...he’s been taking our wounded, Rowena. Not to heal them.” My laugh came out too sharp. “Taking them where? You mean to the infirmary? He’s an Alpha, he cares for his own.” Raven’s hand found my wrist, squeezing until I felt the bones. “Do you want the truth or a lie that lets you sleep?”

He had a friend? Kendrick never had a friend before. He wasn't even sure how that sort of thing worked. Sure, Twillow had agreed to live with him but he never made any assumptions that they were anything but civil, cohabitating acquaintances. In fact, up until this moment, he thought their arrangement was coming to an end; that the pretty fae would leave any day because she couldn't acclimate to his presence. She was still so flighty around him. But her statement had just blown a big hole in that frequent thought.
