The magic book opened on its own, Rico and Niffa patiently wait for whatever the blank page will going to write, they were seated, together, at the long wooden table surrounded by the wall of books. A light was formed, and the empty page was filled with letterings in a freestyle script carved within the thin sheet of paper. They narrowed their eyes trying to read the first letter, it was too bright, and the lettering was almost as white as the paper. The light vanished and the letters turned into tinted black, thick and printed, not written by a hand. The whole page was filled, it says,

Then, the golden sun broke through the clouds, and the entire world was covered in brilliant light. It was breathtaking. I sat there, watching the radiant sunrise as my breath grew shallower, and my body became weaker. Until the end, when there was nothing left, my lungs gave out. Leaning in his arms, I took one last look at the man I loved. "Evan, don't cry…" As the sun rose, my trembling hand, caressing his cheek, fell for one last time. "Melody! Melody, wake up! Didn't you say we'd go see the aurora together? Melody!"

I didn’t need the light to see, but it made me feel as though I was keeping the darkness at bay. Skye was stood, staring numbly into the back of my truck. “Look,” he whispered, pointing a shaking finger into the cargo bed. My phone light bounced off the seeping red dizzyingly. Three words had been written in harsh capital letters, though the paint they’d used – it’s not blood, I said to myself, it can’t be – was dripping, smearing the edges of the otherwise knife-sharp letters. The ink shimmered faintly, catching the last of the light. Lūmen. Meaning Light. I felt the translation more than I knew it. The word flared in my mind, sharp yet cold. And then — the pulse again. Stronger this time, coursing through the parchment and into my wrist, up my arm, until i dropped the letter on instinct. It fluttered to the desk, landing softly.
