“Why do I get the feeling that you hate me even more than Priest does?” Shaking his head, he scoffs and pulls my arm out of his grip. “I met my Fated fifteen years ago right here in Vegas in the middle of a suburb,” he starts. “She was beautiful; hair the color of honey, eyes bluer than a cloudless day, and a temperament that could cause even Gabe to calm down.” I frown. “What does this have to do with me? What is a Fated?” He turns around to face me and places the tray on the nightstand. “Ever heard of something called a ‘mate’ amongst werewolves?” I nod. “Well, we vampires have something called a Fated, and only vampires 200 years and older get to meet theirs.”

"Okay, listen, deep breath, don't crash the damn car again, I'll explain." She crosses her arms, one eyebrow raised, jaw tight, like she's about to file a complaint with the universe. "In our world," I start, keeping my tone calm and patient like I'm explaining algebra to someone who hates math, "Fated Mates are the real deal. It's not just love or lust or whatever. The Moon Goddess literally pairs souls. Like, cosmically. Think destiny, but make it magical." Ava squints. "Okay... but what does that have to do with me? I'm human. I bleed wine and sarcasm, not moonlight and wolf magic."

Does he even know where babies come from? “I don’t care what Rose wants, bud,” Johnathan says. “I’m not going to do anything she wants.” “And I won’t let her chase me away,” I add. "This is my home. I snapped. He opened the book anyway, flipping to a marked page. “The Fated Pair,” he read aloud, his voice rich with conviction. “When the fated pair unite, they will experience a love like no other. This union, created and blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, grants the couple incredible power and seals their destiny to bring about change.” I stared at him, breath short. “Uncle…” “It’s the only explanation,” he said firmly. “You and the girl, Lila. You’re the fated pair. The shared dreams, the bond that won’t break, the pull you feel toward her it’s not ordinary.”

It didn't add up. Their myth told them that Fated Mates were destined to be with one another. Their souls were bonded. Whether they were complete strangers or not, the intended mates should become acquainted and grow up together because their compatibility and affection for each other were already set in stone by destiny. It didn't seem right that Landon kept pushing her away this way. The Moon Goddess, could she have been mistaken? Had the Seer made a mistake when she prophesied they were a star-crossed couple?

I stared at the page of Rafe's diary that suddenly opened, as if haunted by an inevitable fate. The words on the page felt alive, as if they were speaking directly to me. I read, absorbing every word Rafe wrote about his search for a Fated Mate, a concept that had been a myth in our lives. Rafe had delved into old books and manuscripts, seeking to learn more about the Fated Mate. He wrote down a dream he had, in which he felt a strange sensation in his chest, a sign believed to be characteristic when one meets his Fated Mate.
