"Don't blame me then." A woman in black robes walked out from behind her. "This is the witch I've hired. She can use dark magic to synchronize your memories with everyone present. Once the dark magic begins, your body will feel like it's being torn apart and there will be no chance to stop." I instantly snapped back to reality and struggled desperately, making the chains on my hands and feet clank loudly. I screamed, "No, no! Don't share my memories!" Sienna sneered, strangling my neck and saying viciously, "Do you know why I fought so hard to become the Alpha Female, even going so far as to kill my loser brother?"

I saw his claws and fangs grew bigger. "Hands off." I heard a woman screamed loudly behind Merlin. Before I could understand what was going on, that woman sliced both of Merlin's hands. He growled loudly because of the pain. She stripped off her coat and covered my baby bump with it. Merlin stood up but before he could do anything, I saw a hand passed through Merlin's chest, ripping his heart out of his chest. I screamed loudly but that woman hugged me. She rubbed my back. The way she hugged me, it made me feel like I have known her for ages. "Shhh… you are fine. I won't let anything happen to your kiddos." She whispered in my ear.

"I am Meridia, assistant to the head of our council." I raised a brow like I was surprised. "They still don't let female head their council, what a shame. Females are weak creatures anyway and not to talk of a mermaid." Meridia didn't want to say another word. I wanted to tease her further. Besides, it was a witch's specialty It wasn't my fault that I was being too nosy. "You have a female merchild?" Meridia shivered for a split second and swallowed her sorrow. "I did."

Smoke coiled from them, black and alive, tasting of sulfur and burnt myrrh. “Adrewine…” Merenrys whispered again, her voice breaking into a tremor. But the creature that rose before her was no child. She stood now as a woman. Terribly beautiful. Her once-small body had blossomed into a form sculpted in temptation and terror. Her imbs long and graceful, skin a shade too pale, as if carved from moonlight itself. Her hair spilled down in dark blue waves and her eyes swirled with concentric storms of black and cobalt, twin abysses that saw through mercy itself.

She replied. I didn’t get anything she said. It was somewhat metaphoric that I find it hard to absorb. For a moment, I just stared at her in the hopes she would get to conclude that I am thirsty for explanation. Magindara let out a sigh. “For as long as there are any bodies of water, the eyes of the merfolk will be able to witness everything. Remember, Oryol is a serpent goddess and that time, she was inside a tank full of water. We have the ability to see everything using the water as our medium. May it be past or present.” She finally explained.

Only first-born daughters birthed from firstborn Mermaids had the gift of song. Indeed, the gills above her collarbone and the dim maroon pigmented collection of scales that made up her tale, verified her existence as a Mermaid but her God-given voice cemented her position as the most important being of the tribe- the Yera. She didn’t share the same grey pearlescent skin colour that was customary to her race.

I had read everything I could about mermaids, their abilities, their roles in the world, and their connection to the deep waters. They were beings of incredible power—creatures who could control the tides, speak to the sea, and heal with their touch. What intrigued me the most, though, was the fact that mermaids didn’t have a specific gender. They were all females until they met their mate. When that moment came, they chose the one who would stand by them, become their counterpart, and together they would wield unimaginable power. Until then, they remained female.

Maxwell asked, inspecting me from where he stood beside Halcyon, both of them suddenly looking a lot closer than I remember them being. "I have made it so that her Mermaid attributes can only be seen by those who know of her true identity.
