She walked back carrying a book like hers – with a make-shift false cover. She threw it on the table.

The book was so good." "You read?" I asked. I had never seen any book in her apartment or caught her with a book. "Yes." She blushed, then quietly. "Romance books." "You don't strike me as the romance type." I looked at her intently. "Is it one of those raunchy books with shirtless men carrying scabbards on the cover."

She decides to read one of them aloud as there’s plenty of time and nothing else to do. Mariah starts reading “Dance of thieves” to Mr. Denis and she enjoys it herself as well. It’s a book about war for power among kingdoms and about fierce women. Mariah likes the book and doesn’t even realize that she’s been reading it for hours, when suddenly she feels an itchy feeling in her throat. So she puts down the book, drinks some water, injects some medicines and them checks up on the vitals. Mariah sits down and stares at the lifeless figure in front of her.

I could listen to her talk about this for hours, though I'm becoming uncomfortably aware of a tightening in my trousers. Xavier would laugh

“I’m sorry, but it’s true. Men think wiggling their eyebrows at us or doing what you were doing is sexy, but really, it isn’t, especially when you’re dressed like that.” I shrug and slump on the bed next to her. “I just thought it was romantic, you know?” She leans over to the side of the bed and pulls out a romance book from under the pillow. “Use this. It’s the best manual for what girls really like.” I take the book and study the cover. A man is kissing the neck of a woman whose blouse is slightly off her shoulder. “Blah,” I say and toss the book to the side. I actually think I’ve read it before.
