I didn’t even have a wolf. The next book, The History of Gifts, looked promising. I sat down on the floor and opened it carefully, trying not to get my hopes too high. There were chapters about mind links, healing powers, even wolves that could talk to animals… but not a single word about silver fire. Or glowing fingers. Or dreams about strange women with snow-white hair. I let out a long breath, the kind that made your shoulders sag. I felt tired. Like the answers I wanted were still too far away.

I’m the only student in the entire university who’s allowed to just take these books off the shelf, and the strange library knows that. The library has the same kind of magic as my cousin Kenna’s castle in Veiled Valley. It’s alive. I turn with a tome about magic communication in my hand and watch hundreds of books zooming in a spiral against the turns of the staircase at the center of the library, sorted by magic. But as I pick through the racks back to my usual table, I spot someone else there. “Oh, thank the Goddess,” I rush out, slamming my book down in front of Georgia, who jostles at the noise, choking on her iced coffee.

I tried to find the words, but instead, I bit my tongue and said nothing. We made our way back to the village in silence. I couldn't take my mind off of Ellwood's words. What could she have meant by being born of magic and the moon? And why couldn't I shake the feeling that it was connected to my dreams? He was engrossed in a thick hardcover, his brow furrowed in concentration. “Find something good?” I asked, approaching him. “Possibly. But I think you might like this one.” He handed me a paperback with an image of a woman wielding a sword on the front. I read the title aloud. “‘The Lycan Chronicles.’ Hmm, never heard of it.” “It’s a fantasy series,” he explained, still flipping through his own book. “Great world-building, complex characters...” He glanced up and smirked. “Plus, it has some... steamy scenes.”

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

The book was older than anything Olivia had ever seen, its cover a deep shade of maroon, almost dark enough to be black, with intricate golden symbols etched into the surface. When her fingers brushed the pages, she felt the pulse of magic flow through her. It was as if the book itself recognized her touch—knew that she was the one meant to uncover its secrets.

There were ladders, too, nestled against the shelves—long wooden ones that reached for the heavens. They seemed to beckon me, whispering promises of untold stories, hidden just out of reach. But the real magic was in the rows of fiction books, the ones I knew best. The ones that offered escape, that invited me into lives and realms I could never touch in the real world.
