Amara's POV Five years does something to a person. It doesn't heal you exactly. Healing implies returning to what you were before, and the woman I was before Adrian Wolfe had never learned to sew hidden pockets into her son's backpack or memorize three different exit routes from every building she entered. The woman I was before wouldn't have known how to build a life from nothing in a city that didn't know her name. But five years gives you something else. It gives you morning.

His chest is heaving against mine and right then, he pulls back just enough to cup my face in his hands. I just stare at him. So now, after all these years, he finally has the guts to tell me he loves me. This man is the same man who looked at me coldly and told me to abort my pregnancy. This man is the same man who chose Vanessa over me. Again and again and again. Five years ago, I was a fool. But five years later, I am no longer a fool. His sweet words mean nothing. “I want to go home,” I tell him, looking away from his face.

They sliced my skin open as I pushed through, but pain didn’t matter anymore. Ten meters later, I burst onto a mountain trail, and from halfway down the slope, modern skyscrapers shimmered in the distance. When I looked back, the “lord’s estate,” the place that had stolen five years of my life, was nothing more than an old-fashioned villa hidden in the hills. I stared at it, stunned, wanting to laugh at the absurdity, yet tears fell instead. Five years of humiliation and five years of being less than a person… Had I even been like a human to them?

It was a mockery. Every time he proudly told others we were in an older woman–younger man relationship, underneath that pride was nothing but disgust. When he swore he’d take care of me, that I’d never need to touch my dad’s money, it wasn’t love. He was just afraid I’d compete with Dawn. What a ridiculous five years it had been. Next year, I’d be thirty, and my entire twenties would end in lies and betrayal. I stood in front of the mirror and smiled faintly. A fine line had appeared at the corner of my eye. As I lifted my hand and touched my reflection, the line seemed to disappear for a moment.

NORA The wheels hit the floor with a jarring thud, the vibration traveling up through the floorboards and into the soles of my shoes. Theo was a heavy weight against my left shoulder, his breathing deep in sleep. To my right, Lena sat in the aisle seat, studying the safety card. She held it upside down because she had already memorized the right-side-up version and wanted a new challenge. Five years had passed since I left this city. Five years since I had stood at JFK with a wedding ring I had not yet taken off.

I then readjusted the guns on the wall to my liking, putting all the different brass knuckles in one box afterwards. I closed the door behind me as I jumped on my bed, finally done with all of it. "Two more minutes and I'll head down," I thought to myself. It was 4:30 p.m, so I still had time. Or at least, that's what I thought until my father's voice boomed throughout the house. "Athena Hendrix! Down here now!" I flinched, quickly getting up and tilting my head in confusion. "I thought he said til five," I spat.

Infuriated, he made yet another video call to me, the one stuck five years in the past. To his shock, the face that appeared on the screen was identical to his own. It was himself from five years earlier. The 27-year-old John couldn't believe what he was seeing, either. His mind went blank. It was the 32-year-old John who came back to his senses first, and he informed his younger self about how he'd confessed the truth to me not too long ago. At last, the 27-year-old John now knew how I'd suddenly found him.

He was off on a film set with Renee. She'd called him, desperate, telling him she felt awful. His response? The same as always. "Wait for me. I'll be back soon." He didn't come back until the fever had already broken. It was always like that. Broken promises, over and over, until all the letdowns blurred together. After one brutal fight, he swore he'd change. Promised he wouldn't leave her for Renee again. She'd given him five chances. This was the fifth.
