The archives were plunged into a thick, suffocating darkness, a darkness so absolute that it felt as though the world had simply ceased to exist.
I froze, my breath hitching in my throat. The darkness was a physical weight, pressing against my eyes, making my head spin. I waited, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm, for the lights to return. For a second, there was nothing but the sound of my own ragged breathing and the frantic thudding of my pulse.
Then, with a sudden, jarring hum, the lights flickered back to life. They didn't return to their full brightness, but they cast a dim, yellowish glow over the room, a sickly, uncertain light.
