And from the very first paragraph, I was hooked. I literally couldn't stop reading. Parts of the story made me cry. Others made me laugh. The relationship between Gracie and her sisters was endearing. But the relationship with her dad... wow, I fully understood what my dad meant about it being a "slow burn". My pussy felt like it had been put on a spit and slowly turned over a fire all night long while I read. I started reading close to eleven and it was nearly four in the morning before I finished the story.

The golden sunset poured through the healing center's windows, wrapping the four of them in warm light. Watching that perfect family scene, I felt like nothing more than an outsider. I was never a part of this family. I didn't belong in that warmth. I tried to speak, but no one could hear me. I wanted to run, but my soul was still bound to Mom. I could only watch in silence as they repeatedly shamed me.

She had simply read the book and arrived with the things it had made her want to talk about. "The chapter about Tobenna's bench," Funke said, about forty minutes into the conversation. "Can we talk about that? Because I think that chapter is doing something that almost no writing about marriage does, which is centering the children not as motivation for staying or leaving but as actual people who are inside the experience."

Theo, his heart full of anticipation and happiness, hugged Mama Hazel and Daddy Axel tightly, "I love our family adventures. Thank you for making every moment so special and memorable." As the weekend drew closer, the family's excitement reached new heights, each member eagerly counting down the days until their shared adventure. It dawned on me, as I paced around the quiet room with Lexi, that I perhaps I could use my sleeplessness for something productive and join my wife in her project of reading some of these parenting books… I selected one of the books – a large hardbound one that I’d be able to set down flat, since I only had one hand – and brought it over to Fi’s desk. I sat there, angling Lexi into the crook of my elbow. Admiring the tidy workspace, I tugged a gold chain to turn on the dim, caned glass desktop lamp. The book was, according to the cover, about raising gifted children. I noticed right away that there were several different spots bookmarked with small, lilac-colored sticky notes.

Sandy suddenly said, glaring at them. Hearing about the two hundred thousand dollars, I was stunned. I could clearly see the fear on my parents' faces. So that was another reason they had favored Sandy. I always knew they cared more about money than even their daughter. Or rather, they only cared for sons. Both my brothers always got more love than I ever did.

She shrieked and ran inside the black house; Jason wriggled out of his father's arms and followed suit, running after her. I shook my head as I looked at them. Beside me, Richard came closer and held me by the waist. "They are a handful, right?" I nodded; yes, they were a handful, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I look longingly at Richard, grateful for my family, the people around me, and the pack. This was my home; this was my pack, and I wouldn't have wanted any other.
