Aurora learned about the annual "Glimmering Night of a Thousand Lanterns," a tradition shrouded in ancient folklore, the legend of the mischievous sprites that inhabited the old mill, and the unsolved mystery of the disappearing scarecrows. Each tale was more peculiar than the last, painting a vivid picture of a town steeped in both the mundane and the magical.

The trees look like they’re trying to uproot themselves.” “I was going to make us tea,” Aunt Liora said, then paused. Her right hand cupping her chin “But maybe what we need is a good old-fashioned scary story.” I raised a brow. “Oh Really?”

Conri went on and sat down "They took my mother when I was just a little boy. I'm sure you've heard of how Greiner used to be our home?" Nuala's eyes widened and she listened to him tell the story of how the fairies had gotten rid of all female werewolves. She felt sorry for him, of course she knew the story too but they were taught at Greiner that all werewolves were dangerous and a serious threat to all Fairies and so it was fair in her mind but after listening to Conri and being in his presence, she realized they weren't as they were described.

It was tight, triumphant, and edged with a shivering sort of pride. "Teacher!" Toby shouted, breathless. "Teacher, today we caught a vampire on the playground. We tied it up and made it scream in the sunlight for hours." Elias looked up, a chuckle dying in his throat. He expected to see a plastic bat or perhaps a particularly large beetle trapped in a jar. Kids in this rural town had vivid imaginations, fueled by late-night horror movies and the encroaching shadows of the surrounding woods. "A vampire, Toby?" Elias asked, setting his red pen aside. "That’s quite a feat. I hope you used a silver chain."

As the stories got scarier, I noticed a few of the younger pack members huddling closer to their parents, seeking comfort and reassurance. Soon, it was my turn to share a story. Feeling the weight of the moment, I cleared my throat and began my tale. "In a small village, there was a haunted mansion. It was said that the spirit of a vengeful witch roamed the halls, seeking revenge on anyone who dared to enter her domain..." I let my imagination run wild, conjuring spine-chilling scenes and mysterious characters. The pack leaned in closer, their eyes wide with fascination, hanging onto every word I spoke. The suspenseful atmosphere made my heart race with excitement.

I said, feigning innocence. I glanced around after speaking. It was true. There wasn't a single living person in sight, but ghosts were everywhere. "This place is cursed!" Charlotte snapped. "I can't even stop. The moment I even think about it, it feels like needles are piercing my hands." Even as she spoke, her hands kept moving. Fear flickered across her face at the scene before her. The terror in her eyes was truly a rare sight to behold. "Is this your doing? Did you come up with all these tricks to scare me? You just want revenge for all the times I picked on you at school, don't you?"

Why did he look at her as if he were starving? The candle on her bedside table flickered, even though there was no breeze. Her skin erupted in goosebumps. She didn’t believe in ghost stories, not really. But she knew danger. And Lucien was the definition of it. She had grown up hearing stories of the Ravagers—ancient beings who fed on more than blood. Their touch burned. Their presence altered fate. But those were myths. Warnings. Fairy tales meant to keep girls from wandering too far from the village. Right?

He claps his hand on my shoulder and leads me into the living room. We sit down, and Grandpa Nick proceeds to tell me the biggest bullshit fairy tale anyone could possibly imagine. He goes on about werewolves and packs and goddesses and transformations. I know I’m not the smartest kid, but the cheese has slid completely off this guy’s cracker if he thinks I could believe all this crap.

“Do you think it’s haunted?” My breath sticks in my chest at her words. Before I can say anything, Jack laughs. “Don’t be stupid. Of course it isn’t haunted.” “Some people think it is,” I counter. “There have always been stories about this place, about the swamp.” The woman pauses as an uneasy shadow flickers across her delicate features. “What kind of stories?” she presses. Jack once again cuts me off. “Who gives a shit?” he chuckles. “Ghosts, witches, werewolves–that’s all kid stuff. The only thing we should be afraid of is the IRS.”
