So many creatures walking on two legs, her father told her stories about these creatures living on land walking on two legs. She thought they were just stories but now seeing them with her own two eyes was unbelievable. “They are a strange pair.” Said one man but the other shook his head as they stood there watching them leave. “They may be strange because they don’t belong here.” The other glanced at them again. “No, I just think they are weirdos who like costumes.” The other shook his head again.

The foot was salvaged, luckily, but it meant that she had to walk with the aid of a stick to balance the twisted foot. Others claim that the story was just an elaborate lie made to cover up what really happened—that she had fallen from a tree where she had been spying on a man with whom she had been infatuated with. The fall likely messed up her ankle, and gave her the unusual gait she now possessed. Both had sufficient substance that could be believed, but they still did not fit quite right. I clean up the rest of the plates with the warm water flowing from the stream, and took them back to the kitchens, where some of the other breeder girls are stationed, putting together a meal.

I understand it is his house and his rules, but some rules are in need of breaking. Carrying on down the hallway, I become very aware of my uneven gait, my slipper whispering along the floor, his boot clomping. “How are you managing to keep my boot on ?” He asks. “I stuffed newspaper into the toe and around the sides, filling up the space around my foot. Then somehow we drift into talking about jobs, and I tell him about the time I worked at a call center and had someone scream at me for twenty minutes about their cable bill, and he tells me about the summer he worked construction and accidentally put a nail through his shoe. “Did it go through your foot?” I ask, wincing. “Just barely missed. But I had to walk around the rest of the day with a nail sticking out of my boot because we were on a deadline.” “That’s horrifying.” “It was character building.” I laugh and it feels good, feels normal, feels like I’m not constantly bracing for the next disaster.
