"I'm sure I can guess the price, Frog. You've got a one-track mind." Frog was going to demand to know where his mortal was. This particular Fate had been chasing after his Innehavre for generations. And while it had been a dirty trick, Tricksy was the only one who knew where that soul was and where it kept ending up. As a Fate, Frog was not allowed to search for him. “What do you know? Must be fate.” I start walking again. “Or I’m in hell.” I hear his intoxicating chuckle as he follows me in silence to the next class. I take my seat, almost in the back. He still sits close, but this time he was diagonal from me and out of my line of vision. Maybe, just maybe, I’d be able to focus in this class. I think I heard fate laugh at me. “What the hell were you and Ryan talking about?”

“I needed to warn you.” “About what?” I question. Now I have an overwhelming feeling that this is about T. T is Fate’s brother, and after Time taking over his body and completely controlling him, this must be what this is about. However, I don’t see where I come in. “Fate, what are you talking about?” “Time is leaving T’s boyd tonight forever,” he tells me. “However, not in such a pleasant way.” “What do you mean?” Fate looks grim. “The way he is going to do it includes exacting revenge. And he’s doing it tonight.”

Fate is known for lacking a mate, with everyone having equal doubt of him ever finding one, so this is a surprise to me. “Take me back, right now. I want you out of my life,” I say quickly, grabbing at his wrist, demanding he uses his powers to take me back to my mate. It’s dawned on me suddenly that if he figures out that I’m close to attaining powers similar to Thought, I would never get out of here. Fate pulls me closer. “Only if you promise to never speak to Thought of this. If other immortals found out…it would be bad, for us both.”

Thankfully no one is around to see me getting man handled by an Immortal. “He killed his family. He will be better off dead, in a place where he can’t hurt anymore. I know an abandoned house you can wait in until Chase wakes. Unless of course, you want Ren to come back to life and come for you both?” Fate says. He leans in so close, I can feel his breath against me, hear the firmness of his tone. I don’t like my options. But I know which one I like the best. Fate keeps his word and brings Chase to an abandoned building he knows of, dumping him onto a couch before taking off to deal with Ren. I try not to think about what he is going to do to him.

It is observing me. “One further disturbance will trigger permanent correction,” Fate states. “This is final notice.” I think of Nora’s hands clutching my coat. Of the way she leaned into me without hesitation. Of the stillness she brought into a being who has never been allowed to stop. “I acknowledge the notice,” I say. The weave loosens incrementally. Fate withdraws, not retreating but redistributing attention elsewhere. Contingencies are already being calculated. Paths that do not yet exist are quietly prepared.

Sophie did not even raise her head as she replied, “There is no progress at all. I have not found him from the videos yet.” Helen said seriously, “Some things are entirely dependent on fate. If there is no fate, then no matter how hard you try, it will still be useless. However, if the both of you are fated, even if you are not trying to look for him, he will still appear in front of you.”
