The shadows recoiled, just slightly, as if startled by her defiance. But they did not retreat. They twisted, contorting into grotesque shapes that mirrored her own fears—faces drawn from memory and doubt. Her own reflection stared back at her in the dark, hollow-eyed and broken.
You cannot lead them.
You will break them as you are breaking now.
Better to wither quietly than to drag others with you.
Mirra’s teeth bared. She dug her fingers into the dirt until her nails bled, grounding herself in the raw, unyielding pulse of the earth beneath. “You are wrong,” she hissed, fury cracking her voice.
