The bartender huffed, her tone like that of a kid who's just lost their favourite toy. “Why? Easily distracted?” “Yeah. There'll be people walking by, and I can check my phone and stuff. Here in the library, I have atleast read a page.” The Prince made a humming noise. Jane tipped her head back, grinning at the expanse of the designs on the ceiling. The cup containing her coffee was getting cold. “So how about...” She raised her brow at that. What was he going to say? Jane licked her lips, waiting for the Prince to complete his sentence.

I’ve lived my life, protecting myself from the world, from disappointment, betrayal and lies, but with her, I began to bring down those walls until I didn’t even know when my feelings developed into so much more without even seeing a glimpse of her. I skim over her collection, Motorcycle Club, Mafia... Disney Villain tales… and then there are the classics that she accidentally slipped out that she reads before denying she read them. He chuckled. Mr. Franklin had us pick activities from a mystery box. Anna and Jane chose ones that required the books, while I picked the one that needed a trip to the library to answer the questions. I was surprised Adrian picked the same thing. “This one, I think this would help,” he said, handing me a book. I glanced at the title. He had a point. I sat at the table and started reading. “Wait, let me see,” he said, standing behind me, leaning closer to read the words. He was too close.

I preferred to go into a staring contest with an inanimate object that to look at Asher, who I might have consciously forgotten. A book on the shelf stood out, it was inconspicuously standing out among its peers; Jane Eyre. A classic I had gotten as a gift for my eighteenth birthday from Reene, thinking of my Reene my eyes began to tear up. I hadn’t contacted any one from home since and although it was barely twelve hours since I left, I could not help thinking of them.

Asher says and Dani nods. “Oh, so do I. Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books. There was another famous sister, Anne. I read her book The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall. I liked it okay, but I much prefer Jane Eyre. A lot of what happened in that book is reflections of what actually happened to Charlotte in real life.” Dani tells him. He just looks down at her and she blushes. “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to fan girl over them. I know most people find it boring when I go on about stuff like this.” Dani does not want to bore him or make him think that she is some kind of nerd.

Sir Franklin moved to the door, peeping through as he opened it slowly. "Please help me. She has lost a lot of blood. She told me there's an old friend who lives here and said his name is Sir Franklin. Hopefully, I think that would be you, right." The lady was crying. I couldn't help but feel for her. I stepped out to see who it might be. That voice reminds me so much of Lauren. Sir Franklin widened the door, I heard him say something like Nyx, possibly I misheard him. He quickly gives the young lady a hand. I stepped forward again to get a better glimpse.

Jane and I separated at the dorm entrance with her promising to come over later so we could head to the orientation together. That tiny promise meant more than I wanted to admit. At least I had someone to walk with. Someone to talk to. Someone who didn’t growl, glare, or grab my face like they owned the oxygen around me. Jane was soft in a way that didn’t feel weak. “At least there isn’t any danger here “, Jane retorted, still looking around. She was looking through a stack of books on a cabinet like her life depended on it. I began to question the sense in even coming here in the first place. I didn’t know what I had hoped to find and Chloe was right; it was reckless. And I couldn’t afford to be reckless, especially not now. I was about to sink a little into despair when Jane called out. “Look I found something.” She held up a little black book that was almost identical to the one I found in my father’s study. There was only more gibberish inside. Both of us froze instantly as if in sync. There were sounds of footsteps coming from the front porch.

“I asked if I could borrow it.” “Oh, yeah. Sure.” I hand it over, but the look on her face doesn’t change. “What?” “You know exactly what. I take it the date went well last night.” She begins applying the liner, her eyes now focused on her reflection in the mirror, but her mouth is still tucked into a little smirk. “It was…memorable.” I get back to what I was doing before—fixing my hair in a messy bun. Rachel clicks her tongue. “Details, Jane. The magic is all in the details,” she muses.
