I drove straight to a contact of mine, a paranoid ex-cop who specialized in bug sweeps. His shop was a cluttered garage on the outskirts of the city, stacked with surveillance detectors and radio frequency jammers. The man barely looked up when I arrived; he just pointed me toward the inspection bay.
“Check the car,” I ordered, my voice flat, though my insides burned with panic.
The minutes stretched, each second heavier than the last, until he came back with his eyes wide. “Two bugs,” he said, holding up the tiny devices between tweezers.
