My stepdad's fantasy
Just that lethal stillness I’ve only seen when he’s about to break something or someone.
He crosses back to the desk, opens the bottom drawer the one that’s always locked with a key he keeps on his chain he pulls out a small matte-black case I’ve never noticed before. Pops the latches and inside it was a handheld RF detector, a flexible endoscope camera on a snake, spare SIM cards, a signal jammer the size of a pack of cigarettes, and what looks like a tiny lock-picking set.
I blink. “You have… spy shit?”
“Construction sites get bugged,” he says, already powering on the detector “Inspectors. Competitors, Angry exes. I learned to sweep clean.”
