Brianna’s little hands grasp ours like we're a family. “Alright, Bri,” I start, holding the book out in front of us. “What story are we reading tonight?” “The princess and the frog!” she declares, eyes sparkling. Kevin groans dramatically. “You always read that!” I smirk, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “How dare you complain about such a masterpiece?” As I read, I exaggerate voices, making Kevin act as a cute frog, Brianna squeals in delight, clutching her blanket tighter when I narrate the part where Tiana becomes a frog too.

Ashley's POV I walked over to the reading corner in the orphanage and picked up a brightly colored picture book. Its pages were filled with cute animals and simple drawings—the kind of content the kids could easily follow. I lowered myself onto the floor on the other side of the group. "Hey, kids," I said softly, a smile warming my voice. A few of them turned toward me. I opened the book and began reading in a relaxed, natural tone. "Once upon a time, there was a little bunny who absolutely loved carrots."

Milo found himself in the frozen forest before Althea and the wolf once again, but for once, this visit was entirely intentional. The wolf raised his head first and Milo nodded in respect to the beast, but when Milo’s eyes shifted to Althea her body remained motionless. She was still kneeling and her body was upright, but her eyes were shut and frost had gathered heavily across her lashes. His stomach lurched as he thought about poor old Bernie and how Milo had not even noticed because he had left his body in such a life-like position, not unlike Althea’s was now.

The marsh beyond the hollow walls stirred as if holding its breath. She felt everything. Rowan’s fury. Lucien’s hunger. Her own rising storm. She lifted her hands—fire and frost blazing in perfect symmetry. The marsh answered. Roots erupted through the floor in long, twisting spears. Fire burst from her palms in a column of gold, but frost intertwined with it—blue-white veins snapping through the flames like ice lightning. Wolves howled as frost sealed their paws to the stone, while the fire seared the air around them.

An hour? At minus forty degrees, I would succumb to hypothermia in ten minutes. Frowning, Katie interrupted a moment later as Glee clacked away at the keyboard. “There’s something you’re supposed to read.” “Hmm? Read?” “In the bookcase, Granna.” Katie crossed the room and removed something from the shelf, came back and set it on the corner of Glee’s desk hutch. It was a small, thin volume of some sort, with a worn brown cover and gold lettering along the spine. “Supposed to read it,” said Katie again, unsure of herself. Or rather, unsure how to proceed. “Chapter seven,” she went on furtively, “uh, page twenty-nine. Paragraph four . . . and five.” The girl fell silent, her pearly grays changing over to sea-green. “And six.”

The book seemed to have come alive under his touch. “What is this?” Lyon whispered, his voice laced with fear and awe. Buy he couldn't stop himself. As he opened the book, the pages seemed to turn on their own and finally stopped on a particular page and his eyes were drawn to the text and as he traced his fingers on it they words seemed to glow under his touch. The words had come alive almost as if they were speaking to him. Immediately, the energy in the room changed as he began to read the words.

Libro Vitae whispered its voice harmonious. "Libro Vitae, please show me where Alastair is hiding," I asked. The book hummed in response. Libro Vitae became warm in my hands. The cover opened, pages flipped continuously until they suddenly stopped. The words on the page jumped off the paper, floating into the air, wrapping themselves around me. In a blink of an eye, I was pulled into the book. Light flooded my vision. Every sound echoed around me. Voices raced past me, speaking in riddles. Some shouting, screaming, others a dull whisper. Libro Vitae's voice became louder as I watched the trees form around me.

The book was about a brave little wolf who went on adventures and learned important lessons about friendship and courage. Mr. Xenois had read it with different voices for each character, making me giggle despite the heaviness in my chest. When he'd finished the story and closed the book, I'd looked at him carefully in the soft light from my lamp.

I smiled as he nodded again, his brown hair bouncing around as he leaned in a little closer. I opened the book and started flipping through the pages, looking for a good story or myth to read to him. I paused for a moment at the title page that read ‘The All Mother and the Sacred Four’, tilting the book towards Calix. He smiled and scooted closer, nodding again as I turned the final page and cleared my throat.
