His hair was an unusual mix between a light brown and dirty blonde, slightly ruffled, but he didn't look like he cared. Gabe was reasonably quiet compared to the rest of the team, always did his own thing and minded his own business. He was one of the bearable ones.

He reached out to take her hand, and I watched as he slowly brought it to his lips. Before he could follow through, his wife, Sophie, cleared her throat loudly, making him drop Ava’s hand like it was on fire. “This is my lovely wife, Sophie,” Gabe said, gesturing toward her.

She turned to him with a hopeful smile, and he nodded curtly, his face unreadable. “Beautiful Damsel!” A graceful, fair-skinned woman took my hands gently as I stepped down from the altar. She looked like she was in her late fifties, but her elegance and beauty were undeniable. “I’m Mrs. Gabriel, Vincenzo’s mother and now your mother-in-law. You can call me Gabby.” She smiled warmly, and I forced a smile in return, hoping to hide the tension building inside me.

Gab was phasing to and pro, thinking about what he is going to do once Boss Dar arrives and finds out that his favorite bed warmer is missing. “Where did you see her last?” Mr. Gab gathered all the guards of the mansion and asked with a wave of controlled anger. The guard of the mansion’s main door raised his hand and then said, “Mr. Gab, the last time, I saw her last night, around eight o’clock in the evening, with a picnic basket in her hand. She said, she is getting bored inside her room and wanted to have her dinner for a change in the garden where she could be able to breathe fresh air too.”

“Then that’s their problem. Not yours.” I swallowed. “Your mama… she’s strong.” He huffed a laugh. “That’s one word for her.” “And your nonna?” “Stronger.” I groaned. “Salvatore!” He kissed my knuckles. “They’ll love you. They already love Gabe. They just don’t know it yet.” I looked back at Gabe, who was now counting olive trees like it was a competition. I tried to focus on the view outside the window, the rolling hills, the vineyards, the stone farmhouses that looked like they’d been there for centuries, but my nerves kept creeping back in.

Stacey clocked the flicker and softened the rest. “I found this half-buried.” She held up the bag with the joint. Gabe’s stomach dropped. One glance and the old parade started: Nick, weed, corner-cutting, the slow slide. “Damn it… Nick?” he muttered, not meaning to say it out loud. Stacey tried a little gallows cheer. “Looks like they had more than marshmallows at the campfire. Want me to take care of it?” Gabe exhaled. “No, no. I’ll do it. Keep combing. I’ll handle my son.”
