We burst into a dry riverbed about half a mile north. Mathias was there. He looked monstrous. His clothes were shredded, hanging off him in rags. His skin was grey, covered in mud and blood. His eyes were glowing like road flares in the dark. He was fighting. Surrounding him were three creatures made of rock and black static. They were massive, easily eight feet tall. Golems. They smashed at him with stone fists that cracked the air, but Mathias was too fast. He blurred, moving like smoke, tearing chunks of rock off them with his bare hands.

I ignored his confusion as the grand, carved gargoyles finally came into my direct view. Their stone faces were masterfully crafted with deeply twisted grins that revealed rows of sharp, teeths. Their pointed ears were pulled back tight against their skulls in a menacing, aggressive posture, and their massive stone wings were spread forward in a permanently threatening stance. Their tawny, highly muscular bodies were seated heavily on the stone perches, knees bent outward, with their clawed hands tightly gripping the platform below. The two gargoyles faced each other in a perpetual standoff, and positioned directly between them was an old and incredibly heavy stone door.

He gave my shoulder a light squeeze. “Guards!!!.” Simon called out. The queen and Amelia couldn't mask their fear, alongside Morgana. A lot of wolves trooped in. As I watched, the werewolf soldiers began to shift. Their bodies contorted, changing shape until they stood on four legs instead of two. Their faces elongated, their ears grew pointed, and their teeth lengthened into fangs. In a matter of seconds, a pack of wolves was standing where the soldiers had once been. They prowled around us, growling and snapping their jaws. Their fur bristled, and their eyes shone with the promise of violence. Derrick stood his ground, unafraid of the wolves surrounding him. The student glanced up but saw nothing above. Gildeon did. Ghulik was up there, clinging to the ceiling like some grotesque insect. Thick strings of saliva dangled from his gaping maw.
