I fixed my eyes just above his head, determined to project an image of unyielding stone, even as I was melting from the inside out.
Then a soft voice, I couldn't hear what it said or where it came from as I was still reeling from the pain. It was a whisper, a strange auditory intrusion that was barely perceptible above the roaring in my ears and the internal agony. It was not the cold, mocking baritone of the man on the throne. This voice was gentle, a subtle presence like warm air shifting the flame, and entirely inside my head. It felt distinctly different from the trauma voice, younger, more vital, but just as impossible.
