CHAPTER 22: THE GHOST SIGNALS The air in the Shadow-District didn't just feel cold; it felt thin, like the atmosphere was being sucked out by an invisible lung. I stood paralyzed as the dozen pairs of ghost-white eyes stared back at us from the dark. These weren't the "Dormants" I had seen in the Council’s propaganda vids—the mindless, drooling husks of failed experiments. These people stood with the predatory stillness of soldiers. "Heart to the Shadow?" I rasped, my hand instinctively going to the black diamond at my throat. The stone was silent now, but the skin beneath it felt bruised. "Who are you?"

There was fresh blood on the floor, but the animal didn't react. I took a shaky step forward, my heart hammering against my ribs. The wolf didn't turn. I walked closer, standing five feet away and holding my bleeding hand out. Nothing. I walked until I was standing right next to the bars, inches from the cold metal. The wolf threw itself at the cage again, trying to get to Declan. Its claws sparked against the iron. It ignored me completely. I was invisible. "You really are a Ghost," Declan said softly. He walked up beside me. He raised the knife again and sliced his own palm.

It really wasn't right, how could there be so many resentful spirits? Some looked like they just came out of a well, with blood on their faces, brushing their hair, but they didn't have any facial features. Some of them were actually unrelated, twisting on the ground, eyes looking to the side. And the one standing there in the middle without any expression was Amelia. She acted like she didn't see any of this, still spinning the purple jade with her fingers: "Evil ghost Dharma-laksana is really nice, don't you think so, Elder Whitebrow?"

The other men in the van rushed to catch their fallen comrade, when a familiar face popped into existence. Ghost melted from thin-air, his eyes black as night. In his hand was the blood-soaked blade that had gone through the throat of the male that had planned on raping me. He smiled at the others, this deadly, flat thing that had the hairs along the back of my neck rising. I’d never say this aloud, but Ghost was even more frightening than my would-be rapist.

Then the walls came to life. Paintings—dozens of them—etched in blood and bone, lit up with ghost fire. Each one a moment in time. The fall of the Ghost Den. The rise of the Deathbound. And at the center—me. Or… someone who looked exactly like me. Kelvin moved closer, jaw tight. “That’s not you… is it?” I stared at the figure. Same silver eyes. Same white hair. But her expression was colder. Cruel. “She’s the first Ghost Wolf,” I whispered. “My ancestor. Or maybe… something more.”

This isn’t just a party — it’s a goddamn masquerade of killers and liars. Mafia kings, cartel lords, their mistresses, and enemies in disguise. Everyone in here has killed people or sent someone to die. Everyone is armed, even when pretending to flirt. Men with tattoos that tell stories of loyalty and blood. Women with eyes like poison. And me? I’m the ghost they’ve heard of but never seen. I felt the heat of every eye on my ass as I glide through the hall. Good. Let them look. I reach for a glass of champagne from a passing tray and take a sip. Cold.

“I’m sorry, Liam. I don’t know how to sense them because I’ve never seen a ghoul before.” “Damn it,” Liam mutters under his breath, tightening his grip on my shoulder. “We need to get out of here. Fast.” Before I can even process what Liam is saying, the ghouls appear out of nowhere. Their ghostly figures seem to appear and disappear almost like a mirage, and their shrieking fills the air. Fear takes over me, especially when I hear a voice inside of my head say, ‘Purple-eyed wolf. I want to feast on your blood and take your powers!’

It echoes through the entire city, a signal for soldiers and Strikers to prepare for battle. He'd known. My face turns whiter than it already is as I scrabble towards the window, looking out at the field over the barrier walls. All that darkness in the horizon are Karensa soldiers. And even from this far away, I see the Ghosts. They are the humans turned into monsters, their large figures almost like wolves as their blood-red eyes search for their next kill. I need to help. Stay in bed. That is an order. Ezra. My face suddenly goes ashen as I realize what he'd chained me to. Had he said that to try and keep me safe? Keep me out of the way?

He then spoke, pointing at Ghost, who by the way was still bouncing around in the flowers. Oh crap, I totally forgot about him! I mentally slapped myself, then turned to the side, “Oh my god, Ghost, get back here!” I shouted at the crazed husky. “Ghost?” The guy instantly asked confused. “Yeah, she’s a total Game of Thrones fan,” Kara explained giggling. “Oh...” He mumbled, while I was still looking at Ghost, who was heading towards me, but suddenly stopped in his tracks and started howling like a crazed wolf.

Marcus, the quiet guy from accounting leaned against the door, arms crossed, with a bitter smirk twisting his lips. “McAllen,” he said. “You’ve been looking real happy lately. I see you enjoy your late night with the boss.” My stomach dropped. “What the hell are you talking about?” He stepped closer, I could see the jealousy in his eyes. “ I saw you leaving the private elevator. Looking like a man whose ass has taken some cock. You’re not the first, you know. The Ghost destroys anyone who tries to get close. You’re just the latest toy.” “The Ghost?” I laughed it off, but my voice sounded shaky even to me. “Sounds like some movie legend bullshit.”
