I sat there for a long time, trying to digest everything. It turned out my ghost housemate used to be a legend at the company that I now worked at. I shut my laptop, my feelings all tangled up. I asked, "So, you're only stuck here because of the car accident… Is that it?" After a long silence, Ivy's voice echoed faintly in my head. It was soft and almost drifting. "It wasn't an accident." My heart lurched. Before I could ask anything else, her voice faded away.

In the moonlight, a woman in a white lace dress was kneeling on the stone steps of the chapel, her face buried in her hands, her shoulders trembling. She had no feet. Below her dress, there was only a swirling black mist. "I see her." Lorenzo let out a low whistle. "Two years ago, Marco put her in the ground right there. Her ashes are buried under the rose bushes behind the chapel." I didn't stop, walking straight toward the chapel. Giovanni froze behind me but didn't dare to call out. As I reached the bottom of the steps, the female ghost's head snapped up. She lunged at me, her face a sickly pale green, her eye sockets empty black pits.

Sitting down comfortably on my bed was the moon lady. I became light-headed and with a scream, landed on the floor with a loud thud, feeling so much pain coursing through me. "What do you want?" I whimpered. "I'm sorry for what just happened. Please, Ghostwriter, I need your help." "What!" My heartbeat hastened. "Please calm down. I know you must have questions about what killed me and how I knew I was gonna die." "Please leave me alone," I retorted, pulling the sheet to cover myself.

Goddess, I hated that word almost as much as I hated keeping up with Alpha Hunter’s ruse. Setting my breakfast down on a nearby table, Sterling hummed quietly. As he turned, his lips twitched clearly fighting a smile. “Actually, I was referring to you sleeping in the library, but by all means you may continue.” I gave him a flat glare which coaxed a chuckle from him, “Fine, but remember you’re the one who said it, not me.” His eyes dropped, scanning my rumpled clothes with interest. “Did you know a ghost roams this very library? Some old scholar type who died of a heart attack in the armchair right over there by the window. He tells me you found something but won’t elaborate on what it is.”

The air is filled with the scent of old parchment and dust. I move between the towering shelves. My fingers trail along the spines of books as I pass—histories, war, bestiaries, and ancient cities. None of them feel like they hold the answers I need. But I keep searching. I pull down a heavy tome on supernatural entities and flip through it. Nothing. I grab another book on creatures of the old world. Still nothing. My pulse quickens with every empty page. I can’t stop seeing that creature’s eyes. I can’t stop hearing the demon’s word.

I spent the next few days learning the purpose of and how to use the equipment that Nora had purchased in preparation for our taking on the paranormal. I found it both interesting and frustrating. There were gadgets for almost everything one might imagine, such as electromagnetic detectors and thermometers. Apparently, ghosts use electricity to help them manifest and, when they do, the temperature in the room will change even if you can’t see them. Being a skeptic at heart, I found the equipment both interesting and amusing.

“I don’t get it. You said spirits and ghosts. Isn’t a spirit a ghost?” She shook her head. “A spirit is free flowing and intelligent. It knows no boundaries and can come and go at will. A ghost is basically trapped energy. Ghost hunters often refer to them as residual energy. Ghosts often don’t realize that they died.
