June Miller did not like silence. In the Lower District, silence usually meant someone was holding their breath before a fight. She sat in the back of the neon-lit deli, tapping her fingernails against a chipped plastic table. Lydia was three hours late. Lydia was never late. June pulled out her phone. She sent a tenth text. If you’re ghosting me for that suit from the bar, I’m stealing your shoes. No reply. The "read" receipt didn't even trigger.

I wanted to be as perfect as I could be for Greg. When I got out of the tub, I checked my phone to see if I had gotten a text. I was disappointed to see Greg hadn't texted me back. Panic set in again, so I texted him. "Hey, just checking. Do you still want me to pick you up?" It was close to midnight, and my stomach was starting to sink. I felt like I was getting ghosted. I don't remember ever being as disappointed as I stared at my phone, waiting to hear back from him.

My phone beeps in my pocket and I take it out and look at it just before walking into the compound. Ghost: Here. She's asleep. I push my phone back into my pocket without responding. I had left Abby with Ghost since I was needed at church. Ghost wouldn't be the only brother missing today. Ghost was one of our prospects but was patched in a year ago. "You're obsessed. Look at you. You haven't eaten. You haven't showered. You're checking your phone every five minutes waiting for a text that isn't coming." He was right. I had checked my phone forty-three times since I woke up. "You might text," I said defensively. "I won't," the ghost said. Cold. Dismissive. "I haven't thought about you since the plane took off. Why would I? It's over." The cruelty of it hit me hard. I couldn't breathe. I grabbed my phone. Opened messages and typed: 'I miss you.' My finger paused over send. "Go ahead," the hallucination said. "Beg. See what happens."

I called. Straight to voicemail. Again. Again. The third time, her phone was off. My heart was crashing inside my chest. I couldn’t breathe. I called Macey again. “Have you seen her?” I asked, voice raw. “No. Wait… What’s going on?” “She’s gone.” “What do you mean, ‘gone’?” “She left a note. Said she needed space. Now she’s ghosted. Her phone’s off.” “Shit,” she whispered. “I’ll try calling her too.”

I already ate two tamales and regret not getting more. I smiled. But didn’t text back. The screen returned to the home page, and my hand drifted back to the mouse. That lasted maybe ten minutes. Then I opened message app again. Seriously. You can’t just disappear like this. You got married, and left chaos behind. If you need help, say something. But don’t ghost everyone. Message sent. But still just one gray checkmark. I stared at the screen, for a long time. Until the ping of a new email snapped me out of it.

Jayden. My heart instantly thundered in my chest, the air whooshing out of my lungs like I’d just run a hundred meters. I took a shaky, long breath, trying to steady myself before pressing the read button. It had been—what?—48 hours since he ghosted me. Was this real? Or some cruel joke my tired mind was playing? Jayden: Are you up? I blinked at the message. Hell yes, I was up. Even if I were dead, I’d be up for this. My fingers trembled slightly as I typed back:
