I replied. The ghosts followed us into the light, a silent, invisible army that would never leave us again. We were the Vanguard of the Void, and the world was finally beginning to understand why we were so afraid of the dark.

The threats. The whispers from windows that no longer held fear. Micah pulled at my skirt. Zaya held a feather like it was treasure. And I realized then that the ghosts weren’t gone. We kept moving until we got to a building which looked old, but strong. As we entered, we were shocked by what we saw. They where ghosts. They looked scary as they were ghosts with no way to see their expression, but I tried my best to calm myself down. “We get that a lot.” The first one said, looking at me. "I don't understand." Alfred said, looking confused.

“We’ve got a fucking ghost. Someone smart. Someone close. Someone careful.” And that, more than anything, was what terrified me. Because ghosts didn’t make noise. Ghosts slipped through cracks. Ghosts could sit beside you at dinner and laugh at your jokes and call you family while plotting your death. I looked up at him, my breath shaking. “Then I guess it’s time we start looking for ghosts.” And Zach, he didn’t smile. He just nodded once. Because if it was us or them? It wasn’t going to be us. Not this time.

The war entering its terminal phase. Above us, Chicago slept. Below us, monsters prepared to devour each other. And between? Two ghosts who'd accepted damnation as the price of ending hell.
