“I was in and out of sleep.” “Thoughts of Titanic?” He turned to face her now, and he was sitting more closely than she thought prudent. “Sometimes,” she shrugged. “Most of my ghosts reside elsewhere.” He closed his eyes and turned his head away. “I’m sorry, Meg.” “I don’t need your sympathy either,” she reminded him, though her tone was just as innocent as his had been. “I suppose not,” he admitted, turning back to face her. “But you have it just the same.”

"I did look her up. If she's still alive, she probably doesn't want to be." Marco's stomach churned. Those words spoken by men like them...the average person didn't know hell. But Marco had seen it in Ghost's wake. "I figured, but I said I'd ask." Marco swallowed and turned toward the door. "Don't come back here, Marco. I might not remember you're a friend." He glanced over his shoulder at Ghost bent over the desk.

I told myself I was going to hug him and possibly understand if he told me he didn’t want to see me again, but could I ever understand? His eyes had been so cold the last time we spoke, the way he looked at me as if I were nothing. As if I had stolen something precious from him. Gina. That name haunted me, echoing in the silence of my mind. I wasn’t her. I would never be her. She was dead, and I was a shadow, a ghost that haunted him in her place.

But then Luca stepped closer, leaning over Ghost’s arm, the heat of him brushing against Ghost’s skin, and that was when the memories slammed back into place. The late-night runs.
