The Queen's Gambit
It was disconcerting.
I looked out of the window as we flew over the Atlantic, trying to ignore the pain in my body. I had refused painkillers because I wanted to be alert. Much as I thought it unwarranted, Natasha’s caution was infectious. I was pretty sure there’d be no trouble but I wouldn’t bet my life – or Irina’s – on it.
She came in and sat on the bed, clad in a beautiful cashmere sweater, the color of her eyes and hair and blue jeans with black boots. A graceful swan, hands clasped around her crossed knee, her eyes sharp as they raked over my prone frame.
