The witch, very spitefully, had finished her spell with Ginger; baking him inside the very center gingerbread man, so he could see the children pointing and exclaiming. He gestured at the baking tray. “Ah.” The man looked down where Griff was pointing. “You’re a man with a nuclear-grade sweet tooth.” “Not usually. But these are making me a believer, I swear to you.” “That’s what I like to hear.” The man smiled again and Griff now found himself seriously warming to the guy. Bizarre and intimidating as that web-and-spider tattoo was, the man was laid-back and friendly, and had a relaxed and accepting vibe around him. It almost made Griff look right on past the insane black criss-crosses on his face and the terrifying arachnids crawling around his neck. “That’ll be two dollars, please.”

Fear crawls through me, and I shudder in the chilly air. “Please,” the man on his knees sobs, running his hands over his jaw. He forces a shaky smile, revealing his gums. “Let’s talk about this. We can figure it out, right?” The large man doesn’t move. He lifts his chin, revealing his strong jawline. Even in the dim light, he looks strikingly handsome. With a swift motion, he reaches deep into his suit pocket. Around his wrist are glossy prayer beads. “No,” he says in a deep voice. “We can’t.”

Gretel was enjoying this so much as she grimaced. "And there's that teeth. Looks like a fucked up shredder." Mother added. "Exactly! So old Man Dirkman claims she walks into the house this morning smelling like sin and yours truly, Hansel. I mean how bizarre is that?! Can you believe the old creep?" Gretel laughed. Mother laughed. I forced a laugh. "That's got to be top of the list of crazy things the old man has done. Completely bunkers, the old fool." Gretel said gesturing just how crazy the old man was.

They seemed to realize that jumping up on him was off-limits, and behaved themselves accordingly. An overweight man in a red flannel short-sleeve shirt and overalls came out of the main house and waddled after the dogs. He had a bushy white beard, rosy cheeks, and tiny gold-rimmed spectacles. For a second I wondered if we’d found Santa Claus’s summer home. “Mr. Derek, Mr. Killian,” the man said jovially, and shook hands with both of them. Everyone exchanged a few pleasantries – how was the drive, how have you been – and then Santa Bob said, “I see we have newcomers.”

The man's voice was melodious, especially when he growled under his breath to talk to himself. "Baby, I can't see… "Give it to me, baby, please…" Was he really that enthusiastic? Even from behind a screen, where he couldn't really make out anything clearly? To be honest, I found it so silly that it was almost adorable, not to mention that his pent-up grunts unwittingly drew me along to his rhythm. Soon, I could hear his gasp of satisfaction from my earphones—the most perfect of endings.

The man smiled. As he did, the giant Tooth ship started cracking—like an eggshell splitting open. “Me?” he said. “I’m the one who actually owns the Oven. And I think these fellas have been stealing from my kitchen.”
