Then the beeping stops and a write-up appears on the screen of the wristwatch and I have to squint my eyes to read it. “Any progress yet?” it writes and another follows… “Speak into the wristwatch, we can hear you” I gasp once I realize they gave me a communication device and they had probably heard the discussions I’d had today… but then if they were hearing all I’d been saying, they wouldn’t be asking me if there was any progress because they would have heard it themselves. I clear my throat and stand up from the bed then I rush into the bathroom and lock the door behind me so no one would hear me when I speak into the wristwatch, in case there’s someone stationed outside the room to monit

Beeping. My gaze snapped back to Hailey. The wristwatch on her arm had changed. The face was no longer a watch. It was a timer. Counting down. Five minutes. “No…” The word formed before I could stop it. Not again. Not her. “Daniel. James,” I said sharply, the control snapping into command. “Get that device off her. Now.” They moved immediately, dropping to their knees beside her, hands steady but urgent as they began assessing the mechanism.

"Give it up now, or we'll have to take it from ya.” Saying that he slowly advanced towards Josh, completely taking his attention from the woman, and so did the other guy.

“No. I think you carry it. All of it. The pain, the rage, the survival. But you decide what to do with it now. You get to choose.” The words hit something deep inside me, something raw and unhealed. My chest aches like it’s being pried open. “I don’t know how,” I whisper. “I’ll help you,” he says. Quiet. Absolute. The silence stretches between us again. Not suffocating this time. Waiting. I slide the watch into my coat pocket. It drags the fabric down, heavy, grounding. I push myself to my feet. Damien stands too. His shoulder brushes mine. Bessie had the eyes of a hawk and when in anger it feels like she's going to rip the person in half. "What did I steal?" she asked the old man, still grabbing the collar of his shirt. "The watch.. the wristwatch. That watch is very important. I want that watch back." he said in fidgety. "I don't have your fucking wristwatch. It's not even gold.." she said casually, showing no interest. "Not gold. It has a detector. Last time it was tracked in Chicago after that I cannot track it.." the old man replied in anger. "You stole it and sold it. Now I want that back at any cost.," he added piquing in anger.

He walked over and sat in the chair across from me. "I’m just tired," I replied. "It’s been a long day already." "It’s barely started," he said. He leaned forward and placed the velvet box on my knees. "Open it. I’ve been waiting weeks for this to be finished." I looked down at the box. My hands felt heavy as I reached for the lid. I slowly pulled it open. Inside, resting on a cushion of white silk, was a watch. It was beautiful in a way that felt dangerous. The metal was a brushed, dark silver, and the face was a deep midnight blue with silver hands. It didn't look like a piece of jewelry. It looked like a piece of machinery.
