Then came a soft, metallic tap as a ring struck the wooden armrest.
Her hands froze instantly above the keys, her heart skipping a violent beat. No, she thought, it couldn't be. Slowly, almost unwillingly, she turned her face toward the dark, empty auditorium. Someone was sitting out there in the shadows, watching, listening, and waiting. And although she couldn't see a single feature of his face, she recognized his heartbeat.
