Wings beat once, and the force of it sent ash spinning across the square.
Everyone looked up. A dragon descended through the smoke. Large. Golden. Terrible. For one wild second, some broken, desperate part of my mind thought of my father. Gold meant him. Gold meant Aurelion. Gold meant Emberfall, bloodline, home, the warmth of a massive dragon carrying his mate and daughter across the sky. Then the dragon opened its mouth.
