My skin is goosebumping all over with apprehensive shivers. I listen hard, cocking my head to the side so I'm aiming for noise at the window, and flinch when instead, hushed voices along the hall give me a jump scare. I pause, hold my breath, and strain to hear, making out two low voices probably saying goodnbight and stiffen all over in anticipation. Heart pounding so hard through my chest that I am sure everyone can hear it, and my ribs are vibrating with the effort of containing it.

It was dark. It was empty. My eyes wandered everywhere only to find darkness and nothing else. I felt goosebumps prickle all around my body. Thud. I jumped as the voice came from my left. With my eyes wide, I stayed rooted to my spot and felt a gust, sending chills to my body but it was not the wind. I noticed the shadow of the figure that ran past me, faster than any human being. Another terrifying sound echoed in my ears and I was about to pee in my short shorts. Growls. I didn’t need to second guess what it was. I gulped and forced my legs to move but they didn’t. My heartbeat accelerated and my knees started trembling beneath me.

I mouthed back, which earned me the bird from her. I turned back in my seat and stared out the window. Truly though what really was that electric feeling, and no it wasn’t a shocking feeling like the one where you push your wet finger into a socket, but it was that chilling feeling that make goosebumps cloud your skin, and that feeling felt alien, but in a good way. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a feeling of freedom. Nothing could bother me, hurt me, or even get to me here. It was like I knew it; my body and soul knew it. So I fell deeper into the soft comfort, embraced the darkness back, and leaned in. Something stirred down here with me, another presence awakening and slowly searching for me. My skin still erupted with goosebumps over my arms and down my back, and the continuous rumbling sound that followed me—vibrated through my chest, making my heart flutter with anticipation, waiting for something.

But today was different. Today, something was wrong. I heard it—faint at first. A sound I tried to ignore. But then it came again, clearer this time—crying. A soft, sorrowful whimper carried through the silence. Goosebumps crawled up my arms. I froze. Who could be in there? This place was always abandoned. Curiosity overtook fear. I bent down, picked up a broken stick from the grass, and stepped cautiously into the building. My heart thudded with each step as the dusty air swallowed me whole. Shadows crept along the walls. The crying grew louder.

It almost felt as though his feet were barely touching the ground. There was no way for him to know how much time was passing. The sun was not moving, and no matter how far he lumbered, he was simply not getting any nearer to the edge of this flat, dreary plain. It was so quiet, but suddenly, Alex felt a slight twitch in his ear. He stopped in his tracks, the hairs standing up on the back of his neck. There was a hot, piercing sensation in his gut; a nauseous feeling as though he was being watched. Alex slowly turned his head to look behind him and felt an immense wave of goosebumps sweep over him as his eyes stretched wide open.

Taking a deep breath, I insisted. “No. I’ll read. Thank you.” He chuckled low, the sound vibrating his chest muscles deeply. Goosebumps broke out over my skin as he bit my earlobe, sliding his hand low to squeeze my thigh. “But where’s the fun in reading? Just watch me and learn, Princess.” …
