She was forced to drink up the content. As soon as she did so, the crowd cackled out aloud and another round of dancing began. Suddenly, the hairs on her head stood uprights. Goosebumps crept up on her skin, her hand quivered as a man masquerading from the crowd moved towards her holding a sharp knife stone. His face was covered with the strange fabric. As soon as that thought came it was replaced by a drunken feeling, gone was the fear and worry that laced her mind. The man broad-chested man that had held saw the changes unfolding in her, released her as the Masqueraded man led her to the slaughtering altar.

I finished in no time and went through the old man’s daughter’s things, I couldn't wear my stinky white gown anymore. May her soul rest in peace. I came out in a red crop top and shorts that hung on my thick thighs, “I’m ready.” I threw my head back, moving my hair to the side. “Hmm,” Thane stood up and headed for the door. “Let’s go.” I walked past the three of them on the couch, our eyes meeting each other. I specifically couldn’t tell whether they were looking at my butt, or my eyes. As soon as I got outside, I pulled out my little mask from my pocket and put it over my face. Despite everything I had bragged on, I was still scared of these monsters.

The guests began to move in a slow, precise choreography as if the steps had been learned in another lifetime. Most of the voices around me were lined with age; men and women who spoke less and observed more. Only a few younger figures were present, heirs, perhaps, shadowed versions of the power I’d just been handed. Their masks were not merely disguise, each one felt like a badge of belonging. The masks, the names, my father’s crumbling journal pages, everything surged up in my chest with a cold, metallic tang. I needed air. I turned toward Mr. Everhart. “I need the bathroom,” I murmured.

My stomach lurched and I did all I could to keep the vomit inside of me. The masked man moved closer, pulling the mask off his face and I gasped. "George?"

“What?” someone choked out. “You can’t be serious—” The masked figure standing at the edge tilted its head. “Simon said,” it murmured. And one person screamed as a loud crack echoed through the fog. Then another. The sound of bone snapping filled the air. I couldn’t breathe. My entire body went cold. The hoodie guy grabbed his own hand — and I watched, horrified, as he bent his pinky until it snapped backward. His smile twitched, but he didn’t make a sound.

She wiped them away after a while and sat up slowly. Then she led down, her hand slid beneath the bed. Her fingers closed around something cold. Metal. She pulled it out slowly. A silver mask gleamed in the faint firelight. Moonfall. A gathering where wolves wore masks and identities vanished. A place where strangers met in the dark. A place where dangerous things happen. Celeste ran her thumb over the edge of the mask. A slow smile spread across her face. “One night of being no one”. She lifted the mask and held it against her face.
