Gigi My mom’s shrieking voice jolts me out of my frozen state. I can still feel a chill running down my spine, my eyes forgot to blink. The lifeless body of my stepfather staring back at me, I fear I may collapse anytime. The cause of his death is a mystery to me, and the sudden appearance of a masked man approaching me like a storm adds to the clouds of confusion. “Rush honey -” My mom urges me, more desperately than before, as we run down the dark corridor that opens at the back gate of the villa we live in.

The man in the ghost mask was stunned for a moment. “What do you mean? Do you know who I am?” he asked in a spooky voice. His voice sounded as if it came from beneath manholes. It was very uncomfortable to listen to. Alex Rockefeller sighed softly. “I hoped it wasn’t you!” Maya Howards seemed a little surprised. “Do you know him?” she asked Alex. The ghost-mask man sneered. “Stop pretending. How could you know who I am? Cut the crap, young man. Will you get lost or not? If you don’t leave, you can stay here forever. This time next year, it’ll be your death anniversary,” he said.

Then I saw him. The man in the eagle’s mask. He moved like a phantom, ripping three masks off in a blur, each strike leaving trails of blood and horror behind.

Chubby big ears, a cute long nose, a pair of eyes as big as green beans, with two holes dug out, revealing a pair of eyeballs. Zack frowned and said, "So ugly, what is this?" Owen said, "This is a mask! Tomorrow is the birthday party, and Mommy is going with me. Aren't you afraid Mommy will recognize you? If you wear this mask, you won't have to worry about Mommy recognizing you at first glance!" Zack took the mask and looked at the cute yet comical mask, feeling a bit melancholic. They were running away and every step that they took made them disappear in to thin air. I wanted to rip the mask off, to let him see the monster and the woman, and to lose myself in the heat of his embrace. But as his fingers moved toward the silk ribbons at the back of my head, a cold splash of reality hit me. I am a murderer, I reminded myself. I am an impostor in a dead girl's palace. He is a man of the South, a man of secrets. If I let him see me—truly see me—I would lose the only armor I had left. The power of my eyes was my greatest weapon, but my mask was my greatest shield. Just as his fingers brushed the knot of the ribbon, I grabbed his wrist. My grip was unnaturally strong, fueled by the desperation of a cornered animal.
