When I'm done in the kitchen, I pour myself a glass of white wine, savoring the tangy scent that rises from the glass. My eyes drift over to my bookcase in the living room, and I pad towards it. I let my hand caress the spines of several books before I halt at the one I am currently reading. It's a dark romance with heavy smut, gory violence and a male lead so morally grey you could call it pitch black. Love it!

Inside: Not yet. I began scanning the shelves. Titles of all kinds filled the aisles. My hand slid across the spines at my eye level. A hard-covered green book smelling faintly of old paper drew my attention: The Origin of Elemental Sorcery. Then another—its gold embossed symbols of the four elements shimmering under the light: A History of Ignith, Hydros, Terragaia, and Glacius. Moving to the next shelf, I spotted a worn leather-bound book, edges frayed from overuse: Hybrid Wolves with Magical Signatures. And a thin one compared to the rest: The Forbidden Transition Between Elements.

The rest of the world could have burned down, and in here, it would still smell like old paper and ink. Perfect. I’d pulled three entire stacks of books around me, a fortress of leather bindings and worn pages: histories of werewolves, dense texts on Lycans, thin, brittle pamphlets about old bloodlines, even obscure case studies of wolfless wolves and the rare, desperate stories of those who’d somehow triggered their first shift late in life. None of it helped.

I’d always loved him. “You should feel her squirming under me, Gio. She’s soft. I can see why…” The fingers of my free hand touched something cold. A metal fork. I would have preferred a knife, but I would work with what I had to hand. Closing my hand around it, I let out an ear-piercing scream. Swinging my whole body, I sank the prongs of the silver fork into his eye. There was no pop as his eyeball exploded or maybe there was, but if so it was drowned out by the sound of his roaring.

Rhory looks at me, clearly trying to show no fear. "Witches? Magic? Curses..." I mumbles to myself, thinking of all that is being revealed. I have a bit of an interest in the other races..." "The books in the library are probably pretty basic." Rhory chews on his lower lip. "I could see if I can find you something with more detail, BUT you have to PROMISE not to let anyone see it or know you have it."

The logical part of my brain, the part that liked neatly restored paintings and clean brushes and answers, was having a very bad month. The occult section was tucked in the farthest corner, behind a dusty pillar and next to a broken radiator that hissed like a snake. The books looked untouched, mostly oversized hardcovers with cracked spines and spooky fonts. I traced my fingers over them, unsure what I was looking for until something sharp pricked my index finger. I jerked back, hissing. One of the books had a tiny iron spike sticking from its spine, like it didn’t want to be opened. I stared at the title.

Nylo preened and he's been visiting Gavin every night since. Vera, who I've always respected for her good sense of judgment, is no better. All it took was for Gavin to offer to get her books. Large tomes on a variety of subjects — philosophy, mathematics, alchemy, supernatural taxonomy, herbology, necromancy, literature. Some of the books are arcane, and if I know anything about the kind of person Gavin is, most definitely illegal. In any case, the damned man has stolen my friend by preying on her nerd weakness.

Seeing titles like 'Minerals and Gemstones' and 'Animals of the Sahara', I knew I was in the science section. I had to search three more sections: languages, music, and mathematics, before I finally found the section that housed the books on the supernatural. At first, all the books I see are about werewolves. Walking further down the row, the topics change from werewolves to vampires to witches. At the very end of the row, in a small section, nearly invisible unless you are looking for it, stand the books about lycans. I decide to start with trying to find what ingredients may have been used in the sedative Clay gave me.

The more she flipped pages, the more shocked she became. She didn’t know if she should feel disgusted at the gory acts or in awe of how it is carried out.
