"Anything for my savior." Maia giggled and ran to her father again. He helped her onto his back before running straight for me. "It's the evil queen!" Maia cried, pointing her sword directly at me. "Hey, I'm not evil—" I started to say but her whine cut me off. "Mommy!" I laughed. "Alright fine. How did you ever get past my guards?" I asked, rising to my feet. She smirked. "I am the greatest warrior in the kingdom! My wolf and I can defeat anyone—even you!" She announced.

The silence that followed was absolute. Slowly, Karlo turned around. The expression on his face wasn't anger, it was a completely blank, hollow, void of pure, unadulterated carnage. The ruthless king who had built an empire on blood had finally revealed his single, fatal weakness to the world. He had tried to hide his little bird, but the hunters had smelled the gold on her gown.
