My chest ached.
“I’m not her.”
Her lips curved.
“Not yet.”
The forest shuddered, leaves trembling as a sudden gust tore through the glade. The world tilted, and for a moment, it felt as if the sky itself was holding its breath.
“Go back,” I said. “To whatever pit you came from.”
She only smiled.
“You are the pit, my darling.”
The ground cracked beneath me, light spilling through the fissures, white, blinding, searing… and I fell.
