​Cassian’s POV ​The Grove of the Obsidian Tree was the highest point in the palace, a place where the barrier between our pocket dimension and the true Void was at its thinnest. The tree itself was a massive structure of black, glass-like wood, its leaves shimmering with a constant, pale lavender light. Its roots went deep into the heart of the mountain, anchoring our entire reality to the frequency of the North.

I am surprised a great chief like Wolfpaw didn't choose immortality. Chief Wolfpaw jumps onto a nearby pine tree branch and shakes the ground when he does. Pine needles fall out of the tree like hair dander. The forest floor is blanketed with brown dead pine needles. The earth resembles a damp bird nest in springtime. The dirt beneath me gives off a wet muddy odor that means the waterfalls are nearby.

The Whispering Pines Forest was a place where time itself seemed to fray at the edges. Its ancient trees, their bark etched with secrets, stood like sentinels, their gnarled roots clutching at the earth as if desperate to remain anchored. The moon, a pale crescent, barely managed to pierce through the dense canopy, casting elongated shadows on the forest floor. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth, pine needles, and something more primal—a scent that made the hair on the back of Philip’s neck stand on end.

he chuckles, sending vibrations through his chest. Pulling me out of my daze, Nate pulls me deep into the forest. The further we got amongst the dark tree trunks, the white gravel disappeared and resorted to a barely visible black trail snaking through undergrowth. Tall shadowed pines stretched upwards like arrows into the sky. The sun struggled to shine through the tree breaks, as the overhanging tree limbs scattered above the barely there path. The scent of sticky sap and earthy moss was pungent in the morning air.

Pine was in one of the rooms located on the third floor of the west area of Haltz castle. Since her arrival here, she has not opened her eyes at all. In her sleep she kept delirious. Just as I walk out of sight I hear Jessie send a low growl through the link before I close it off. Peyton and I walk towards the tree line just making small talk. It is a crisp fall day and the view of the forest and the changing fall leaves are breathtaking. All of the reds, yellows and oranges make the trees look like they are ablaze with the different colors of Autumn. Mother Nature does some of her finest work this time of year and I absolutely love the crisp air.

Genesis The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows through the dense canopy of the forest. Leaves crunched underfoot as I sprinted through the underbrush, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps. The tall pines loomed overhead, their dark silhouettes merging into an almost impenetrable wall. Every few steps, branches clawed at my arms and face, but I pressed on, driven by a sense of urgency that outweighed the pain.
