His weathered face showed no surprise, only a deep, weary caution. His eyes flicked past me to the soft earth near the cave mouth, where a single, clear paw print—larger than any natural wolf’s, with a distinctive notch on one pad—was pressed into the mud.
He didn’t speak. He simply knelt and, with a swift, practiced motion, used the edge of his hand to smear the print into oblivion. He rose, dusting his palms on his trousers, and finally met my terrified gaze.
