My only thought is to protect him and as many others as I can from Cara’s power bomb, because that is what it is, an electromagnetic pulse of her power. I jump into Liam’s arms, wrapping my aura around him and throwing it out to as many wolves and fae warriors as I can reach before the power blast reaches us. I asked again. “Guardian.” “What does that even mean?” I breathed. “You tell me.” It responded. “I am yours to command and you are mine to protect, mistress.” I watched him, considering his words and the intelligence behind his eyes. I wasn’t certain if that were another reflection of my mate, or a reflection of the depth I had given the golem. It was unsettling having those eye bore into me as I thought. It made the ache of loneliness, the need for Rhazian by my side, that much stronger.

I growled coldly, disconnecting the line. Taking a second more, I rushed to our group text, typing furiously to her, “Take care of yourself, baby girl. We will be home soon.” As I looked up into the eyes of Benji and Baylor, I know I needed to stay calm for them but we all felt it. Making my way along the long line of kennel-like structures, there’s not a single shifter left with the strength to howl loud enough for Chief Marcus to hear all the way at his lavish office. Last time we saw a free shifter within the barrier is over a week ago. Noah, our second in command and younger brother to Chief Marcus, shot it down. The female wolf in her mid-fifties was almost as skinny as the ones we have in holding right here. I doubt she would’ve been howling at the moon had she survived.

He looked around the room. “World saved.” Lila smirked. “Maybe.” Ethan looked toward Marcus. “What now?” Marcus didn’t answer immediately. He looked at the monitors. At the system logs. At the architecture diagrams of the Guardian’s new governance model. Then he said quietly, “You wait.” Jessica frowned. “For what?” Marcus looked at the screen. “For the next evolution.” Because deep inside the Guardian’s network— Hidden beneath millions of lines of code— Something new had appeared. A vision slammed into her: She saw her mother — who had died years ago — reaching out from the corrupted spring, begging Serena to join her in eternal peace. We were being invaded and this was not the time to be tired. *Venom DIES tonight,* everyone shouted. One guardian in particular added that there were no more living males in Venom. Two dozen had stayed behind to do a sweep and round up more females and pups that were discovered. *I’ve got Luna Lola. Setting her up in a cabin but she’s threatening me with a gun,* a guardian said, clearly nervous. Sawyer immediately huffed and I knew he was scolding her. Your Luna is your equal, and I wasn’t confident her wolf would listen. But she wouldn’t shoot a fellow pack member for Goddess sake!
