Tate James' character work in the Hades series sticks out to me because of how she uses shifting perspectives to build a fuller picture. Each perspective carries its own biases, its own blind spots, and its own emotional logic. Madison's internal monologue, especially in the first book, is this raw, frantic scramble for survival mixed with a surprising cunning she doesn't even fully acknowledge.

What I find less convincing, though, is how quickly some of the supporting cast solidifies. The core trio around Hades get their moments, but others like Cass or Lia can sometimes feel like they exist primarily to serve Madison's emotional arc or to deliver plot-critical information. Their own motivations outside of the central conflict aren't explored as deeply. The strength really lies in the dual protagonists—watching Madison's calculated vulnerability clash with Hades' controlled brutality creates a tension that feels genuinely dangerous and magnetic, which is the whole engine of the series for me.

I've read the entire Hades series, and I think new readers should absolutely start with 'Hades', the first book. There's a pretty intense multi-book arc about Madison and the underworld empire she inherits, and jumping in anywhere else would just leave you confused about the power dynamics and all the nicknames. The first book sets up her reluctant takeover and that initial tension with X.

Some might argue you could sample a later book for more action, but you'd miss the foundation of her character. Madison's not a typical heroine; she's hardened by circumstance, and seeing that evolution from the start is what makes the series work. I tried recommending book three to a friend once, and she had no idea why the main character was making certain alliances—it just didn't hit right without the backstory.
